Rogation Sunday

Dear Cathedral Family,
While this 6th Sunday of Easter continues Jesus’ progression toward the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, it also marks the beginning of another traditional season in the life of the Church. This is also “Rogation Sunday,” the Lord’s Day prior to the Rogation Days (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) before Ascension Day on Thursday.
In our church, these days go back to the beginnings of the Anglican tradition, when they were ordered to be observed in early summer as a time of prayer and fasting for the harvest yet to come. While we no longer observe the tradition of perambulating the parish boundaries (“beating the bounds”) while pausing to pray for fields and businesses, the Book of Common Prayer does still contain propers for fruitful seasons, commerce and industry, and the stewardship of creation. You may find these on pages 258 and 259 in the prayer book.
So this week, while you remember and give thanks for the heroic service of those who ventured much for the liberties we enjoy, also give thanks for the abundance of our land and pray that we may be faithful stewards and seekers of justice and peace.
Have a safe and peaceful Memorial Day weekend.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
