NURSERY AND YOUNG ELEMENTARY

Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children,

you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

Matthew 18:3-5

FOR CHILDREN (UP TO GRADE 4)

At Christ Church Cathedral we respect and nurture each child’s innate spirituality and understanding of God’s profound love for them, tailoring experiences in worship, education, and fellowship to the individual developmental needs of the child.  Formation of the child begins before birth, and continues throughout a child’s life. It is our role as their faith community to help support and be with our children along the way.

REGISTRATION FOR 2024-2025 SUNDAY SCHOOL EVENTS

Parents are asked to register their children if they will take part in any of our offerings (not just Sunday School). This helps the children's and youth team plan well, and provides the information our staff and volunteers need to be responsive to your child. Here is the link to registration.

NURSERY AND CHILDCARE
Caring for babies and young children from birth to age 3

Children of any age are welcome at our services.  Parents who prefer to take their children to the nursery will find a bright, cheerful space staffed by experienced, loving child care workers who have received Safeguarding God's Children training and a nursery coordinator who also has First Aid training.

Our Nursery is a warm, hospitable place for the youngest members of the Cathedral family from birth to age 3. Ms. Shameca Williams is the cornerstone of this ministry, who along with local college students, tailors Sunday mornings to the needs of those in her care. A curriculum is utilized when children are age appropriate.

The nursery is open at 9:45 a.m. every Sunday.

Where to find the Nursery

The nursery is located in the Brantley House which is adjacent to the Servery.  When you approach the Chapter House from the garden, enter by the glass doors on the garden porch.  Take the second door to the right and proceed down the stairs.  Please ask an usher for directions.

CHILDREN'S CHAPEL AND SUNDAY SCHOOL

Each Sunday during the 10:00 a.m. service children ages 3 to grade 4 may attend Children's Chapel.  Children gather at the back of the church where they will join the procession.  They will follow their leaders to Children's Chapel, followed by Sunday School.  Worship is lead by trained adults who are assisted by parents and youth volunteers.  The children return to church at the time of the peace.

Students begin with a brief worship experience followed by a lesson from the Workshop Rotation Method.  This intensive Sunday School experience enables students to “go deep” in learning carefully selected stories from the Bible as well as other traditions of the faith.  After four to six Sundays children are well acquainted with the selected stories. Lessons are taught appealing to all the senses, auditory, tactile, visual, and even taste, which further enriches the experience. Age groups are divided as needed to enable everyone to learn at their level.

COMMUNION PREPARATION

Sundays, October 6, and 13

This class is for children, ages 10 and under, who currently receive the bread and wine at Holy Communion, as well as those who have never consumed. We use a wonderful book by Jennie Turrell,  an art teacher and wife of the dean of the School of Theology at Sewanee: The University of the South. Through meaningful story and discussion children learn the importance of ritual and connection found in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. If possible please be present with your child on both Sundays.

ACOLYTES

Children in grades 1, 2, and 3 are invited to attend Acolyte Training to learn to serve as Children's Chapel Crucifers.  These children vest and process both at the beginning and at the end of the service.  They lead the children from the church to the chapel for Children's Chapel where they serve as acolyte for that service.  The Children's Chapel Crucifer returns with the children at the time of the Peace, and they are seated with the older acolytes.

If you would like to serve on an acolyte team, sign up here or contact Fr. Thomas Heard
