Respite and Renewal

Dear Cathedral Family and Friends,

I am thankful for the time of respite and renewal my family and I have enjoyed during the month of July. This included time in the quiet and beauty of Kanuga (with daughter Elinor along), where I experienced a week and a half of (virtual) residency for the Shalem Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership Program. After returning to Mobile, I spent the last two weeks—as so many of us have spent our “vacations”—at home with my family, reading and tending to some of the things that give life meaning and beauty—home itself, walks in nature, time spent in rest and reflection. This was all sacred time, in sacred places, with holy people. I hope that wherever you have been during July has also been filled with sacred presence for you, as well.

This first Sunday in August we will return to live streaming of worship in the church at 10 a.m., still following the format of Simple Presence worship used in July. Also this Sunday, the Cathedral Vestry will meet to discern our posture for worship and formation as we move into the fall. You will be hearing more about this in the days and weeks ahead.

As many families prepare for the beginning of the school year in early August, this year of COVID-19 brings much more than the usual excitements and anxieties. The Cathedral Children and Youth Team is preparing a number of ways to let our children know that God’s blessing and our love go with them to school, holding them in God’s presence and protection all the time. Please keep children, parents, teachers, and their families in your prayers every day.

In this time of challenge and uncertainty, our calling is first of all to stay grounded in the essentials—prayer and love of God, good action and love of neighbor, remembering the words of the Psalmist, “In God the Lord, whose word I praise, in God I trust and will not be afraid.”

Faithfully,

Beverly+
