Choral Evensong
Cathedral Choir
Sunday, March 15 at 5:00 p.m.
Reception following in the Chapter
House
Among the many possible forms of
Christian worship, the service of
Evensong, also known as Evening
Prayer, is remarkable both for the
centuries-old liturgical tradition it
represents and for the atmosphere
of contemplative devotion enabling
it to remain deeply meaningful for
worshippers today. The liturgy traces its origins to the daily rites of the medieval church and has been said or sung regularly in its current form since the sixteenth century. All the words have been shaped and refined by long use and by renewed attempts to express the mysteries of God. For some people, it is music, not words, that carries them into the presence of God: and for others it is silence. Most of us need all three—words, music, and silence—to lead us into the spirit of worship.

So this service provides a liturgical, architectural, and musical space in which one may gather the preoccupations and anxieties of life and hold them together with a recollection of the God, whose saving acts we celebrate. Many find that through participation by silent attention while ministers and choir speak and sing in their name, they make the words and music their own. Once you have quietly offered those preoccupations that may be cluttering your mind, you are free to go on to offer to God all that you are. Then, this service is experienced for what it is--an act of worship, in the Spirit, expressing our thanksgiving and hopes to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Reverend Bertice Berry, PhD, a sociologist, author, lecturer, storyteller, mother, and grandmother. She is a woman of science and faith. Ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church, Dr. Berry will be our preacher that day. Dr. Berry believes that every one of us has been given a unique purpose and it is our obligation to find it and use it to improve first our own self and then the lives of those we live and work with. She is a world renowned expert in corporate engagement, belonging, transformational leadership and internal wellness. She has enthralled our delegates as a speaker at our Diocesan Convention, and we are excited to have her preach at Christ Church Cathedral.
Christ Church Cathedral is glad this year to host Trebled Soul, the Alabama State University Vocal Jazz Ensemble, along with the Excelsior Band for our 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration. Join us for a service highlighting the rich tradition of music we enjoy from Black composers and cultures, including jazz, Afro-American hymns, and spirituals.

All events free to the public. Giving is appreciated but never required.

JOIN FRIENDS OF CATHEDRAL MUSIC
Music is a vital ministry of Christ Church Cathedral and is made possible by the generous pledges of members and friends of the Cathedral to its annual operating budget. Additional funding through Friends of Cathedral Music allows us to sustain a broader artistic and spiritual outreach to the greater Mobile community. We are thankful for these gifts that go above and beyond other support given to Christ Church. Please consider making a gift to the Cathedral music program this year and become a Friend of Cathedral Music. These gifts will be used to support our special programs and the overall quality of our musical life. We are thankful for those of you who make this an annual habit. We are continuing a long and great musical tradition here at Christ Church Cathedral.
