Dear Cathedral Family,
This Sunday will be our 5th Annual Black History Month Celebration. As always, and in keeping with our long-standing relationship, the day will be a time of thanksgiving for and support of the Elite Chapter of the Mobile Kappa League, mentored by our own Carl Cunningham, Jr. Kappa League members and their parents and mentors will be our honored guests, and the proceeds of the brunch following worship will go toward their preparations for college entrance. You will find opportunities to give and to serve in this email.
Our other special guests for the day will be: The Reverend Dr. Bertice Berry, our preacher, who is an author, speaker, storyteller, and Deacon in The Episcopal Church; Trebled Soul, under the direction of Tyrone Hayes, jazz vocal ensemble from Alabama State University; and our good friends, The Excelsior Band. We have also invited elected officials of our local government, as well as the diocesan Commission on Racial Reconciliation and Justice. This is always a wonderful day of thanksgiving and celebration for the gifts of generations of African Americans to the Church. Please invite any friends or neighbors who would like to be a part.
On Monday, February 2, in response to our bishop’s call, we will be holding a service of prayer for discernment and healing in these troubled times. If you have not already, please read or watch his message to the diocese here. Our service on Monday at 6 p.m. will begin with the liturgy that will be shared throughout the diocese, and we will continue with Holy Eucharist. The propers for the day will be for the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord. This service will be in-person; those of you who would like to live-stream may do so via the link provided by the diocese.
As we enter Carnival season, there will be many opportunities for celebration of our treasured local traditions in the lead-up to Lent. Please be safe and remember the One who makes all things possible.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
