Salt and Light

Dear Cathedral Family,

This Sunday, Jesus continues teaching about the reign of heaven in the Sermon on the Mount. Last week, the Beatitudes showed what and who the divine promise is for. This week, the sayings about salt and light elaborate the roles to which Jesus calls his disciples. Salt and light are essential to foster and further life; they are elements in the transformation of others. Small amounts can make the difference between thriving and languishing. Jesus cautions about the cost of missed opportunities to be salt and light for others, and he offers encouragement for how great a difference a little bit can make.

Last Sunday was filled with instances of salt and light discipleship, as we welcomed a beautiful crowd of family and guests for our 5th annual Black History Month Celebration. The life stories and experiences shared with us by Kappa League members and alumni demonstrated the possibilities for life transformation opened up by offered opportunities and by dedicated mentorship and disciplined community. The living sermon shared with us was an invitation to each one of us to seek out and take opportunities to be salt and light for others.

Thank you to all the many disciples whose service to this community made the day a success—cooks, servers, clean-up crew, youth helpers, greeters, ushers, and all of you who extended personal invitations to friends, colleagues, and neighbors to “come and see” the joyful life of this day. I am deeply grateful for the work of our outstanding staff: Josh Coble coordinated fabulous guest musicians; Carolyn Jeffers managed all the logistics, wrangling, and support; Brenda Stanton kept track of all the donations and sponsorship. All together, you helped make the day a great success for all. Your support of the Mobile Kappa League reached new levels.

Although we missed the presence of The Reverend Dr. Bertice Berry with us, we now have a future visit to look forward to!

Faithfully,

Beverly+
