Dear Cathedral Family,
Last Sunday’s Operation Backpack, led this year by Deacon Pratt Paterson, was a great success—thanks to the enthusiastic participation of many youth, parents, and other members of the Cathedral Family. As I mentioned at the announcements, we will continue to support the needs of the students in the Prichard and Maysville tutoring programs throughout the school year. Your ongoing contributions to Operation Backpack will be put to good use.
This week, our attention turns to musical outreach. Organist and choirmaster Elizabeth Gatter has just overseen the third summer of the Betty Coale Music Scholarship program, supported by a generous endowment made by Harwell Coale in memory of his wife Betty. This Sunday will feature the concluding musical offerings of several of this year’s students, and following our worship we will give thanks for their gifts and celebrate their awards in a special reception during hospitality time. I hope that many of you will be present to congratulate the students and their families. We are forming wide, ongoing connections with a whole new generation of musicians in our region through this innovative program.
On Saturday, the Cathedral will host the second diocesan choir festival, our first since 2019. We will welcome singers and church musicians from throughout the diocese to a day of workshops, collaboration, and fellowship, culminating in a Festival of Hymns service at 3:30 p.m. The service is open to everyone and will also be available to watch via streaming. Thank you to all those who have volunteered their time and effort to make this day possible, and we would welcome more greeters and hospitality helpers on Saturday. Guest clinician Kyle Ritter, Canon for Music at the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, North Carolina, will also join us for worship on Sunday morning.
These are all ways that the life of Christ Church Cathedral reaches out to our community and our diocese to share the love of Christ, deepen our relationships, and serve our world. I am, as always, thankful for the many gifted people here who give so much of themselves in our life together.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
