Dear Cathedral Family,
As I write this message on Thursday, our attention and our prayers are focused on those in the path of Hurricane Helene. Our bishop and diocesan staff gathered with clergy on Zoom late yesterday to pray together and to share information and resources for those in the eastern portion of our diocese who will likely be affected by the storm. Please keep all of these communities and those who support them in your prayers and be attentive to any ways that we may be helpful in the aftermath. Already we are seeing evacuees in our area, and extending hospitality to them is one tangible way to be the love of Christ at this time.
Our scripture readings this Sunday emphasize the power of the “name of Jesus” and the healing power of prayer. Although “thoughts and prayers” are often dismissed in public and online conversations, the truth is that prayer’s power is beyond our understanding. At the very least, prayer can open us to greater compassion and to willingness to receive others in the name of Christ. At its greatest, prayer can accomplish more that we can imagine.
This weekend many of our families will be participating in Baylights at Beckwith, and we also pray for their safety and their enjoyment of this time of fellowship in the larger life of our diocese.
Our prayer is most powerful when we pray together, and I look forward to our weekly prayer in the Body of Christ this Sunday.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
