Feeling at Home

Writer's picture: Dean GibsonDean Gibson

Dear Cathedral Family,

This week will bring a relatively unusual occurrence: the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Temple, set for February 2 on the Church calendar, will occur on Sunday. This means it will replace what would usually be simply the Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany.

This will take us back in the chronology of Jesus’ life and ministry, and it will also deepen our experience of Jesus’ fulfillment of God’s promises. Part of his Epiphany “manifestation” occurs in the return of the Lord to his Temple. When Mary and Joseph brought him to the Temple forty days after his birth, Jesus was going to his Father’s house. Later in this same chapter of Luke, Jesus returns to the Temple at age 12, staying to sit with teachers there and telling his worried parents, “I must be in my Father’s house.”

One of our deepest wishes for all our children is that the Lord’s house feels like home to them. If you knew that feeling growing up, then you probably recall that sense of belonging and rightness that came with being at church. Even in adulthood, we seek that feeling in our church homes, and I hope that Christ Church feels that way for you.

As we move into February, opportunities to be together here pick up. Sunday, February 9 will be our annual Black History Celebration and Kappa League Brunch. Then later that week, Valentine’s Day will bring the beginning of the Mardi Gras Parade season. We will celebrate together at the Cathedral Parish-Wide Mardi Gras Party on Sunday, February 23 at 5 p.m. for the Neptune’s Daughters parade.

There is much to celebrate and give thanks for in our life together, and there are opportunities to serve our surrounding community in acts that show God’s love in this place. Come and be a part.

Faithfully,

Beverly+
