Dear Cathedral Family,
February is the month established in the United States for honoring African Americans and raising awareness of Black history. This second Sunday in February, the Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany, will be our fourth annual celebration of the gift of African Americans to all Christians.
Our worship will draw special attention to the sacred music that is among the many gifts shared with the Church by African Americans. This musical tradition has deepened and strengthened our shared faith as it has also been a shaping influence on our traditions.
We will be joined this Sunday in our worship by the Coahoma Community College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Kelvin Towers, as well as by our friends in that long-standing Mobile institution, the Excelsior Band.
We will also be joined by the young men of the Mobile Kappa League, mentored by our own Dr. Carl Cunningham, Jr. The proceeds of our annual Kappa League Brunch this Sunday following worship will go to support their preparations for college entrance.
Our preacher this Sunday will be Carsten Kennedy, whom you may remember from his previous time in the pulpit here this summer following General Convention. Carsten is a senior at St. Luke’s Episcopal School, a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Mobile, and a leader among our diocesan youth community.
We will also welcome this Sunday the members of our Diocesan Commission on Racial Justice and Reconciliation.
As Christ Church enters its third century as a Christian community worshiping in downtown Mobile, we give thanks for the gifts of African Americans to this place and to our community. Most importantly, we commit ourselves to the ongoing ministry of reconciliation among all human beings and to the formation of new generations of Christian leaders for our community, nation, and world.
Faithfully,
Beverly+
