ADULT FORMATION

As parents, you have the greatest responsibility of providing Christian formation training to your child(ren). Unfortunately, there is no handbook given to parents with steps to accomplish this goal. One part of my job is my job to help you do this.

Each month, a new article will be sent to you. It will either cover a liturgical season, something from the liturgy -item, words, or gestures, special day, person, or prayer method.

This first article is about the 40 days theme of Lent and provides you with some simple meal prayers to help add to your family prayers.

Please know that I am here to help you as you take this journey, and I would be glad to answer any questions you might have regarding Children’s formation.

MARCH 2026

We are currently in Lent, a 40-day period of preparation before Easter. The number 40 is mentioned numerous times in the Bible. It is found in both the Old and New Testaments.

Noah’s flood

Moses on Siani

The Exodus

Jesus’s Temptation

Nineveh’s Repentance (Jonah’s story)

Elijah’s journey

Moses’ life

Post-Resurrection

In addition to the link to the number 40, several of these themes include fasting and sacrifice, often in preparation for a significant event.

While Lent is not in the Bible, it became a part of the Episcopal church from the early Christian traditions (3rd-4th centuries) as a 40-day, wilderness-inspired period of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection, preparing for Easter. The name derives from an Old English word lencten, meaning “spring,” symbolizing the lengthening of days.

Common practices include giving up luxuries, engaging in daily prayer, bible study, attending worship, and performing charitable acts. Here are some meal prayers from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd that you and your family might use during Lent.
