What did Paul know that caused him to proclaim the Good News that the Lord is near? He knew the abundance of God’s presence with us and our presence with each other. He knew the inexhaustibility of God’s mercy. He knew that we are all, always, being invited in to the gospel parable’s wedding banquet that God has provided for us in the gift of Jesus Christ.
This Sunday we will welcome Joseph Cooper Drane, son of Carter and Megan Drane, into the banquet with us. He will be wearing his robe, and we will promise to do everything in our power to support him in his life in Christ. We will reaffirm the promises of our baptismal covenant, among them to “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ.”
Our promises to and with Cooper will remind us that at the heart of our stewardship is the care of persons. God’s great gift to us is the children in our care, and we do well to remember that we are accountable before God for them. All of our decisions about “time, talent, and treasure,” and about places and things, rest on the foundation of this gift and responsibility. I hope you will be present this Sunday to join in the celebration and take your place at the table.
