The Cathedral Welcomes You:
A Message from Cathedral Music Director Christopher W. Powell
When I envisioned the seventh season of my time with you as Music Director, I never imagined that the world would be in such a state as it is now. The global pandemic has affected us all, and we are all changed in ways impossible to fully understand at this time. The arts have suffered greatly because of the ban on live performances, and church music making has nearly come to a halt, and yet we are beginning to work our way, slowly, toward a return to something resembling normal programing once again. What I have kept at the forefront of my mind, when planning this season, is the notion of flexibility. To that end, our events can all be appreciated at home via an online platform or in person, God willing.
The 2020-2021 music season retains the form of our past seasons, but adapted to the situation we are in today. We will have special music for All Saints’ Day, guest artists, Lessons and Carols, Christmas, our weekly Lenten programs, and a Cathedral Celebration. Standing in place of our usual “masterwork” concert, so often collaborative and of large scale, you will find a requiem for just a few instruments and two singers. Our worship has also changed, and we continue to look forward to a day when we can fully gather, all of us, to celebrate the Eucharist with our choir and singing congregation.
Amidst all of this change, one thing remains the same, and that is our commitment to fine music at Christ Church Cathedral. In this season of challenges, we will use our soloists, choir members, handbell ringers, guest musicians, and friends from the community at large to present music that leads us to God and inspires us in the beauty of holiness. There is not only one correct way to run a music ministry or a concert season, and I am grateful to the cathedral leadership and our wonderful musicians for making this season of reinvention possible.
As always, we cannot do this without your help. Please consider donating to the Friends of Cathedral Music to support us during this time. The support given to your music ministry will be a blessing to our artists, so many of whom are suffering during this time, and a blessing to all who worship at Christ Church. I look forward to seeing you in person and online.

JOIN FRIENDS OF CATHEDRAL MUSIC
Music is a vital ministry of Christ Church Cathedral and is made possible by the generous pledges of members and friends of the Cathedral to its annual operating budget. Additional funding through Friends of Cathedral Music allows us to sustain a broader artistic and spiritual outreach to the greater Mobile community. We are thankful for these gifts that go above and beyond other support given to Christ Church. Please consider making a gift to the Cathedral music program this year and become a Friend of Cathedral Music. These gifts will be used to support our special programs and the overall quality of our musical life. We are thankful for those of you who make this an annual habit. We are continuing a long and great musical tradition here at Christ Church Cathedral.
