At the offertory, the choir will offer a hymn-turned-anthem of my own composition, Eternal light, shine in my heart. I entitled the hymn tune, Scott, after the late John Gavin Scott, Organist/Choirmaster of St. Thomas Church in New York City and former Organist/Choirmaster of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Scott was one of the greatest church musicians of our time and is a big part of the modern revival of English Cathedral music. I was privileged to see and hear Scott conduct the choir of St. Thomas on many occasions and to hear his organ recitals. He took the already famous St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys and made it into an astonishing musical ensemble. His love and dedication to his faith and his craft are things that many aspire to. One could learn a few things even sitting in the pew before Evensong listening to him conduct a pre-service warm-up. My tune, composed the day after his death, is my own tribute to him and to his legacy. Even though I didn't know him well, his music lives on in my memory and in the hearts of all who heard his playing or his choirs.
This week, there is a special opportunity to worship with us at the Cathedral at a different time. During the month of October, we will offer Chapel services on Sunday afternoons at 4:00. These simple Eucharists will be more informal than our morning services and will feature unique prayers and music within our faith tradition. Music for these services will heavily feature the music from the Taize Community, an ecumenical religious/monastic group in France. The music of Taize is powerful in its simplicity. Often just a repetitive refrain, the music is very conducive to meditation and prayer by creating a litany-like atmosphere. We will be joined by various musicians over the course of our October afternoon services and aided in prayer with diverse instrumentation and voices. If you or someone you know might be interested in a relaxed, Sunday afternoon Eucharist, consider attending on October 4, 11, 18, or 25! Regardless of which service you attend this week, we look forward to seeing you at Christ Church.
